Francophone Short Films in Harlem: Series 2, 8 Short Films from 10 Francophone Countries

SERIES 2 8 SHORT FILMS FROM 10 FRANCOPHONES COUNTRIES is screening in the cinema for $15 on 4/2 at 7:30pm as part of Francophone short Films in Harlem.

The films are also available online for free from April 3 - April 15.

ANIKSHA

Vincent Toi, 2020, 20 min., Canada (Quebec)/Mauritius Island

Aniksha is a young woman from the Indo-Mauritian diaspora. After her arranged marriage, she finds a job at a call center, a booming industry in Mauritius. There she encounters her enigmatic supervisor and discovers a world of possibilities. This new world view places Aniksha between the choice of tradition or of a modern lifestyle.

INTRANQU’ILLITES

Edward Owles, 2019, 20 min., Haiti

Lyrically narrated by award-winning Haitian poet James Noël, 'IntranQu’îllités' is a vivid portrayal of the contemporary Haitian art scene.

CHASSE GALERITE

Brian Hawkins, 2019, 6 min., USA-Missouri-French Creole Community

Chasse Galerite is a passionate hunter whose untamed desire often leads him into trouble. Set in the Illinois Country in the late 17th century, this humorous and imaginative folktale, cherished by Missouri's French Creole community, is told in the local dialect by one of its last native speakers.

BALTHAZAR ET MADELENA

Gabriel Colban, 2021, 20 min., Switzerland

On the Cirque Rainor track, Madalena, the hot woman, is very worried. Since the accidental death of Diego, the trapeze artist, she is convinced that her number is the target of a curse. During the last rehearsals, Madalena is propelled. Outdoors, she catches the eye of Balthazar, the new trapeze artist. Time stops. It's love at first sight. A haunted love story.

KELASI

Fransix Tenda Lomba, 2021, 10 min., Democratic Republic of Congo-Belgium

Kelasi (School in Lingala) is a historical, socio-political, and cultural stroll through the Congolese education system over the years. A system characterized by the political will to manipulate the masses. Shot using several animation techniques, the film chronicles a school day in the Congo, and leaves an open door to the future of education.

Miriam spies on her father one morning. She gets discovered and invited to join him on his journey for the day. Little does he know; she will be the one to save the day...

“Excellent first day to you of the rest of your magical life where everything will be magic, enchantment and mischief. Well, normally there is a choreography but there, I really don't want to do it for you."

BRIDGE-DIRECTION OF THE LAW

Boukef Taher, 2021, 5 min., Algeria

Direction of the Law is designed to serve a certain group at the expense of other. The director not only proposed this idea, but also Bridge dives into a purely political problem.

In a symbolic language, it is characterized by darkness that indicates a situation of despair from the present and fear of the future, and the symbols of nature scattered among the scenes as a expression of the vast differences that characterize the social situation under those systems.

There will be a cocktail reception and a post-screening Q&A.
