Maysles Cinema welcomes Miryam Charles, one of those most vital voices in contemporary independent film, to present her feature Cette Maison along with a collection of short films. Courtesy of Oyster Films.

From Haitian descent, Miryam Charles is a director, producer and cinematographer living in Montreal. Her films have been presented in various festivals internationally. Cette maison is her debut feature film; it had its world premiere at Berlinale Forum and has been screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards at Indie Lisboa, Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, Montréal Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, and Indie Memphis. Her ongoing work explores themes related to exile and the legacies of colonization. Her second feature-length fiction film La marabout is currently in production.

Bridgeport, 2008. A teenage girl is found hanged in her room. While everything points to suicide, the autopsy report reveals something else. Ten years later, the director and cousin of the teenager examines the past causes and future consequences of this unsolved crime. Like an imagined biography, the film explores the relationship between the security of the living space and the violence that can jeopardise it.

After the death of their adoptive daughter a couple goes to Haiti looking for her relatives. There, they meet with a DNA specialist who might have the power of resurrection.

Drei Atlas (7 min, 2018)

A maid is suspected of murdering her former employer. Questioned by the police, she will reveal the existence of a supernatural power.

Second Generation (5 min, 2019)

A few days before her wedding, a young woman learns that her fiancé is accused of sexual assault. She goes to Haiti to confront the alleged victim

Song for the New World (9 min, 2021)

Following the disappearance of a man in Scotland, his daughter recalls words chanted before nightfall.
