Humboldt USA

In three namesakes of 19th century queer German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt — Humboldt County, Nevada, Humboldt Parkway in Buffalo NY, and Humboldt Redwoods, California — the struggle for environmental protection interweaves with technological alienation and climate collapse, in this experimental journey of American nature.

The project has been presented at the Ji.hlava New Visions Forum, Academia Film Olomouc’s Camp 4Science, DOK.forum Munich, and the Gotham Week Project Market, and recently received a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

G. Anthony Svatek, Director

G. Anthony Svatek is an artist-filmmaker based in NYC. Having grown up at the foot of the Austrian Alps, Anthony is deeply awed by the living world and how techno-urban lifestyles change our relationship to natural and urban environments. Amongst others, his work has been shown at NYFF, IFFR, Edinburgh IFF, Ann Arbor FF, Big Sky, and DocNYC, and published by Harper’s Magazine and Le Cinéma Club. He's received support from NYSCA, Austrian Cultural Forum New York, Simons Foundation, and he is the recipient of the New Visions Golden Gate Award at SFFILM.

Anthony works professionally under the company Kulturfolger Productions, which includes projects for the New York State Parks Department, BBC World News, Deutsche Welle, and Pioneer Works. He has staffed seasonally at the Flaherty Film Seminar, The Climate Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History..

Elijah Stevens, Producer

Elijah Stevens is a documentary producer based in New York City. He associate produced HOLLYWOODGATE (Venice 2023), KING COAL (Sundance 2023; POV PBS 2024), FIRE OF LOVE (Sundance 2022; Academy Award nominee for Documentary Feature 2023) and co-produced THE INVISIBLE EXTINCTION (CPH:DOX 2022). He also associate produced THE SEER & THE UNSEEN (2019), SKY AND GROUND (World Channel 2018), TOWARDS THE NORTH (2017), and LOS COMANDOS (World Channel 2018), which was shortlisted for an Academy Award. 

His work has been supported by Sundance, Inmaat Foundation, The Gotham, DOCsBarcelona, DOK Leipzig, DOC NYC, DOK.Forum, and Ji.hlava, amongst others, and was a 2019-2020 fellow in the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio. He is currently producing a slate of independent feature documentaries, and is a founding producer of Signpost Pictures, with Sara Dosa and Shane Boris.
