Teen DocAuthors Fellowship

Program Dates: February – May, 2025

The Teen DocAuthors Fellowship (TDA) is a free, 16-week after-school film program for students ages 13-18. In this fellowship students will deepen their focus on still image making centering portraiture (people and place). We will be privileging film photography by offering some intro to eco-processing techniques as well as honing skills in darkroom printing/processing. Students will also focus on audio documentation accompanying their portraits with stories. Students will be able to contrast these techniques with digital tools and eventually also incorporate editing tools that can aid in their final showcase projects.

Sessions for the TDA Fellowship will take place weekly on Tuesdays from 4-7pm, beginning February 18, 2025.  Students are expected to meet in person at Maysles and then at Hamilton Heights Darkroom (TBD) for production sessions during the second half of the program.

This workshop is facilitated by Harlemite and artist Akeema-Zane whose work can be found in the hyperlink! The application link to get to know interested students is here: https://form.jotform.com/Maysles/teen-docauthors-fellowship

In this fellowship, teens will focus on ways of seeing, and together we will explore the different tenets of film and movie making. This fellowship provides the forum to explore and learn the supporting and necessary skills in producing film and curating and producing festivals as well as developing basic skills of media making (including photography, camera use and sound making). Students can expect to also hone their voices as critics and writers. The program culminates in a student showcase where students serve as curators, moderators, panelists as well as featured filmmakers.

Sessions for the TDA Fellowship will take place in person at Maysles Documentary Center, unless accessibility needs are communicated and approved. A selective, hybrid version of the program (online and in-person) will be offered to students. In-person sessions will meet in accordance with New York City Department of Education guidelines and are subject to change based on current Covid-19 rates in NYC. Students will have masks and hand sanitizer available to them.
