The Maysles Documentary Center presents a NYC community screening of Episode 1 of A TOWN CALLED VICTORIA, a three-part PBS docu-series about the south Texas town of Victoria, thrown into the national spotlight when a local mosque erupts in flames in an apparent hate crime. After the media moves on, the community is left to reflect on its complex history with racism.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director, Li Lu, and several documentary participants, moderated by filmmaker, Chanelle Aponte Pearson.
We are also delighted to host live performances by Palestinian American comic, Atheer Yacoub, and Lebanese American poet, Ghinwa Jawharis.
We will begin the evening with a reception, where art-making stations and light refreshments will be provided.
In these difficult times, we hope this story of resilience, solidarity, trauma, and reconciliation can offer a mirror and a path for every community. We must strive to do better for the sake of our collective futures. Please mark your calendars for this evening of community building and restoration.
