Filmmaker Somnath Waghamare, whose Battle of Bhima Koregaon (2017) appeared in the virtual series KRAANTI: Visions of Resistance, visits Maysles Cinema in person to present his new film Chaityabhumi, a celebration of the site where anti-caste activist, Buddhist convert, and architect of the Indian Constitution B.R. Ambedkar was cremated in 1956.

Each year on Ambedkar’s death anniversary, millions of his followers visit Chaityabhumi in an event known as Mahaparinirvan Din. Waghamare blends observational footage of the day and interviews with contemporary Dalit rights activists to reveal the legacy of one of India’s most important public figures, the enduring potency of his ideas and the use and misuse of his image.
