MAY DAY READING with THE WORKERS WRITERS SCHOOL
Co-presented with Worker Writers School
May Day at Maysles
For the past twenty years, Worker Writers School has assembled taxi drivers, domestic workers, street vendors, Starbucks baristas, and other “frontline workers” for free monthly poetry workshops across New York City and around the world.
Maysles Documentary Center welcomes Worker Writers School members to perform their newest work on our front stoop as part of our May Day/International Workers Day celebration.
Worker Writers School recently projected their poems on the Brooklyn Bridge as part of a collaborative project with the DIA Art Foundation in Chelsea; published an anthology of poetry from their pandemic workshops on Zoom, Coronavirus Haiku (Kenning Editions, Chicago); transformed their haiku into an old school neon sign that hangs in the front window of the Worker Justice Center of New York; and regularly perform their poetry at venues across the city including the Nuyorican Poets Café and Joe’s Pub. Poets will include members of Domestic Workers United, New York Taxi Workers Alliance, Street Vendor Project, Starbucks Baristas United, and other worker centers.
