A passion project for first-time director Whoopi Goldberg, Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin’ to Tell You reconsiders the life and career of the comedian once billed “the funniest woman in the world” in light of her influence on later generations of American comics from Joan Rivers and Bill Cosby to Eddie Murphy and Kathy Griffin. Lacking footage of Mabley’s groundbreaking pre-Civil Rights era output, Goldberg deftly pairs playfully animated renderings of the artist with recently unearthed audio recordings to bring her perspicacious presence back to vivid life.
