Filmmaker Gloria Rolando tells the story of Haitian immigrants to the province of Oriente in eastern Cuba. The voices of prominent historians join the memories of Haitians and their descendants in Cuba to understand a chapter of the complex economic and social history of the Caribbean. Remembering the mass of black workers who fertilized the fields of Cuba with their sweat from the beginning of the 20th century, the film reflects on the nuanced history of Haitians in Cuba. Many older family members were victims of a reshipment as if they were damaged goods; a forced repatriation to Haiti when they were no longer needed in the sugar cane fields or coffee plantations.
Despite the discrimination Haitians suffered, the Creole language, voodoo along with other musical and dance traditions remain in the cultural landscape of Cuba. This film serves as a setting reminder of a virtually forgotten chapter in holistic Afro-Caribbean diasporic history.
Donations: Due to the heinous economic sanctions placed on Cuba by the US, the nation’s people open struggle for necessities as well as supplies for their various industries. On behalf of the film maker, we are calling for cash donations as well as media equipment donations for her video production group, Images of the Caribbean. Gloria Rolando is a founding member of Images of the Caribbean, a film collective dedicated to projects focusing on Afro-descendant communities in Cuba. The production group requires mobile phones (new or used but in good condition) & external hard drives w/ 2TB minimum, ideally new or lightly used and with full storage abilities).
We will have a box near the screening room where you can place listed tech items and you can give cash donations in an envelope with “For Gloria” or “Images of the Caribbean” written on them, to the ticketer who will put them aside or the film maker. If you know of any funders who’d be interested in supporting Images of the Caribbean or resources, or organizations that specialize in providing gear & equipment for indie productions, please share such information as well. If you are interested in donating outside of the event date, contact Yaania Bell at yaania854@gmail.com who is gathering donations for the video group throughout 2025 and working on Gloria’s upcoming project.
