BIPOC Doc Editors is excited to announce a new series of editing masterclasses at the Maysles Documentary Center in New York City. Each in-person class features the editors of recent acclaimed documentaries as they share their process and take you on a deep dive from rough cut to picture lock. The first installment will be hosted by Daniela I. Quiroz and will include a screening of GOING VARSITY IN MARIACHI!

GOING VARSITY IN MARIACHI

In the competitive world of high school mariachi, the musicians from the South Texas borderlands reign supreme. Under the guidance of Coach Abel Acuña, the teenage captains of Edinburg North High School's acclaimed team must turn a shoestring budget and diverse crew of inexperienced musicians into state champions.

Daniela I. Quiroz is a Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award winner who primarily works on social justice-focused documentaries with a unique perspective and visual style. Daniela’s latest project, THE STRIKE, premiered at Hot Docs 2024 where it won the Student Choice Award. She edited GOING VARSITY IN MARIACHI which follows a year in the life of a competitive High School Mariachi team in South Texas. GOING VARSITY premiered at Sundance 2023 as part of the U.S. Documentary Competition. Quiroz edited LATINO VOTE: DISPATCHES FROM THE BATTLEGROUND, which broadcast on PBS ahead of the 2020 November election. Daniela was one of the editors on THE LAST OUT (Tribeca Special Jury Mention) alongside Carla Gutierrez and Mark Becker, which follows 3 Cuban migrants pursuing their dream to make it to Major League Baseball. Quiroz co-edited the feature length film, REBEL CITIZEN with Skylight Pictures, an in-depth look at Haskell Wexler's use of cinematography as a tool for social justice, which premiered at the 2015 New York Film Festival.

BIPOC Doc Editors is a public, searchable online database of editors complimented by a series of initiatives for change. Without a fundamental and intentional effort to provide tangible long-term support to BIPOC talent, systemic issues of access and equity in the edit room will remain. BIPOC Doc Editors seeks to foster change by connecting editors to productions, providing professional and networking opportunities, and building community nationwide.
