Ayiti From Quebec and New York: A Lineage of Film and Discussion through a Marxist Lens is a teach-in, film screening, and mutual aid event. We will kick off with a teach-in led by the independent Haitian scholar Jean Elissaint Saint-Vil (Jafrikayiti) who is based in Ottawa, Canada. His research centers Haiti’s role in implementing sustainable environmental protection protocols for Haiti’s mineral resources. Saint-Vil will speak about Canada's role in the exploitation of Haiti’s natural resources.
After Sain-Vil’s lecture there will be a film screening of HAÏTI (QUÉBEC) (TAHANI RACHED, 1985, 59 min.), a documentary following the lives of recent Haitian migrants who have been displaced due to the political uproar in Haiti in the 80s. The film speaks about themes of longing for home, and racism Haitians endure while living in Quebec. After the film screening there will be a Q&A discussion.
This event serves as more than just a political and educational resource; we’ll close with a coat drive, with the aim of contributing to mutual aid efforts in support of Haitian lives. The money raised from the coat drive will go towards support of Haitian refugees and immigrants in the US fleeing persecution. The theme of the public program is to educate individuals about what is occurring in Haiti and how Canada and America play a pivotal role in funding the colonial violence that is occurring which has led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Haitians who have settled in Montreal and New York City.
