Friday, March 8th at 7 PM

Presented in Collaboration with Filmmakers of Color United in Spirit

As part of Palestinian Solidarity Month, students at Columbia University, led by Filmmakers of Color United in Spirit (FOCUS), have organized film screenings throughout the month of March to shed light on the Palestinian experience and showcase Palestinian voices. Amid Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, presenting Palestinian stories has taken on unparalleled importance and urgency.

Maysles Documentary Center is delighted to co-present the first program in the series, featuring WAITING FOR GAZA (2020) and PALESTINE IN THE EYE (1977). Together these films explore filmmaking in diaspora, the revolutionary potential of the archive, and the place filmmaking holds in the movement for Palestinian liberation.

PROGRAM:

WAITING FOR GAZA
Guillaume Kozakiewiez, 2020, 73 min.

Five years after their Cannes selection, twin filmmakers Arab and Tarzan Abu Nasser prepare their second feature film. Exiled in Paris, they confine themselves in their 82 square foot studio where they recreate a mental Palestine. Waiting for Gaza follows them to the heart of their twinship, of their history, and of what both haunts them and pushes them to do cinema.

PALESTINE IN THE EYE
Mustafa Abu Ali, 1977, 28 min.

PALESTINE IN THE EYE chronicles the profound impact of Hani Jawharieh’s death for the PLO Film Unit. The film reflects on his life through interviews with family, colleagues, and his own cinematography, including the moment of his death while filming for the Unit in 1976.

Post-screening discussion to follow!
