16mm + RARE OUTTAKES
1966, 20 min. digital
In the wake of his “In Cold Blood” (1965) literary triumph, American novelist, Truman Capote, chats with Karen Gundersen from Newsweek magazine at his beachfront home in the Hamptons. Capote shares his "self-regarding" personality through hip philosophy and calculated jokes. He then takes the book’s real-life hero, Kansas cop Alvin Dewey (and his star-struck wife) for “breakfast” at Tiffany’s.
Capote declares “In Cold Blood” to be part of a new genre, the "non-fiction novel," turning reality into art. Cited as inspiration for the Direct Cinema movement and the Maysles Brothers' unscripted feature films to come, this intimate footage showcases the writer at the height of his career; Capote claims it is the spontaneity of life that compels him to portray reality, but it is his own fresh energy and startling sense of humor that keep us intrigued.
Rare outtakes include running on the beach, making Bloody Marys, and laughing with Albert and David Maysles in Capote’s writing studio.
Special guest: Sadie Stein, a writer, editor and cultural critic.
