YANKI NO!

Richard Leacock, Albert Maysles & D.A. Pennebaker, 1960, 53 min.

Tracing anti-U.S. sentiment as it builds in Latin America, YANKI NO! juxtaposes the candid humanity of life in a Caracas slum with the actions of diplomats and political figures, including Cuba’s Fidel Castro addressing a rally of one million people. Asked by ABC in 1960 to do a story on Latin America, Drew Associates returned with YANKI NO!, which drew raves from critics marveling at how the newfangled portable cameras – wielded by Albert Maysles on Fidel Castro and Richard Leacock on slums in Caracas – could capture a story. TAKEOVER: How We Occupied a Hospital and Changed Public Health Care

Emma Francis-Snyder, 2021, 38 min.

TAKEOVER explores the twelve historic hours on July 14, 1970, in which fifty members of the Young Lords Party stormed the dilapidated Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, drove out their administrative staff, barricaded entrances and windows, and made their cries for decent healthcare known to the world. They raised the Puerto Rican flag atop the building, as well as a banner reading “The People’s Hospital” – a nom de guerre still used today. Through archival footage, seamless reenactments, and modern-day interviews, we follow the Young Lords’ resistance against institutions curated by wealth and white supremacy, and their fight for the most basic of human rights: the right to accessible, quality healthcare.

Post-screening discussion with members of the Black Panther Party Commemoration Committee, moderated by King Downing.

As part of this event, we will be unveiling a portrait of Albert Maysles, painted by veteran Young Lord and revolutionary artists, Carlito Rovira, and celebrating the Maysles’s commitment to uplifting and preserving the legacy of the Black Panther Party and Young Lords. Reception to follow!
